What a surprise it was to see 2 Barnacle Geese (Branta leucopsis) at Marais de Sionnet this saturday morning!

Birding is a passion that teaches you many lessons, one of them is to expect the unexpected.

Some would think June is not the best season to go birding at Marais de Sionnet : high and thick vegetation, not much water, migrating birds all gone, so lower number of species you can see... sure. But I realize that each season brings something different and it is always worth it to go for a walk there. For example, this season is when you can see the beautiful Common Reed-warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) singing beautifully from the reeds. This is a beautiful sighting because you can stay on the path and be really close to watch and hear them. They see you obvisouly but you can see you do not disturb them. Thus, you can appreciate their natural behavior in fantastic conditions.

Today I was glad to go. I am always glad to go actually. I was looking for a Little Owl that I have seen many times in the area lately when suddenly I heard the typical sound of geese behind me. I turned and was delighted to see 2 Barnacle Geese flying right over me.

It is the 100th I spotted at Marais de Sionnet. You can check the latest sightings of this great birding hotspot on ebird : https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2758150

Go out as much as you can. There is no bad season for bird lovers.

Love Nature.
