Birding in Portugal : 100 first species

Greater Flamingos in Portugal

I have been in Portugal for a few weeks and birding in Portugal has been absolutely fantastic. In a way, end of summer and early fall are not the best seasons to go birdwatching in Portugal, as many migrating species already left to reach their wintering grounds in Africa. Nevertheless, there are still many fantastic bird species to see and many amazing birding hotspots to explore.

I have been mainly birding in Leiria province, which according to ebird hosts more than 300 bird species throughout the year. Birding in Leiria province has brought me memorable encounters, especially around Obidos and Peniche, with Greater Flamingos, Eurasian Spoonbills, Ospreys and more!

Exploring the country, I have had some beautiful sightings in Alentejo as well. Birding in Alentejo will be absolutely incredible in spring I am sure, as the diversity of landscapes and ecosystems provides a great range of habitats for many many birds, but I have already been able to spot the iconic Iberian Magpie many times, as well as the Booted Eagle or the Red-legged Partridge.

All in all, I have had the chance to spot more than 100 bird species already, which is really enthousiasming. I just can’t wait to see more! My next adventures will hopefully bring me to the incredible Great Bustard :)
