Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) in Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, India. February 2015. Not baited. Not called in.

Entering the sanctuary that morning, this Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) was one of the first birds we spotted. I really like the black mask on its head. Shrikes feed on insects, and sometimes on small lizards or even birds, that they impale on a thorn. Because of their relatively weak feet, it is hard for them to hold a prey steady when consuming it. So they found another way.
