A wonderful species of woodpecker found almost only in California. It looks very similar to the Ladder-backed Woodpecker (Picoides scalaris) which is not found in Orange County. The visual differences are mainly the head and back patterns. On this picture you can see a male Nuttall's Woodpecker, easy to recognize from the female thanks to his red on rear crown and upper nape.

Love Nature.
