White-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus javensis) at Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, Kerala, India. February 2015. Not baited. Not called in.

This bird did not give me the chance to take a better picture than this terrible one. We were on a birding walk in the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary with our guide when he spotted this White-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus javensis). It was the middle of the breeding season, and we heard its loud drumming before we could actually see it on top of this very tall tree.

The White-bellied Woodpecker (Dryocopus javensis) is one of the largest living species of woodpecker. Even being so high in the tree I could appreciate its great size.
